20" x 20" Steel Access Panel, white. This gives you a finished, closable opening in drywall for whatever sits behind it: a shutoff valve, a cleanout, a junction box. The size names the hole you cut, not the frame around it. It is not fire-rated, so if the wall or ceiling has to hold a fire rating you need a listed rated panel instead.

1. Level and outline. Hold the panel flat against the wall where you want it, check it sits level, and draw around the inside of the frame. That pencil line is your opening. Do not trace the outside of the frame.
2. Cut the drywall. Cut along the line with a drywall saw. Stay on the line: a hole that comes out slightly tight is easy to ease open, one that comes out too big is not.
3. Secure and install. Push the frame into the hole and screw through the flange into the drywall. The flange laps over the cut edge on all four sides, so a rough cut stays hidden. The door closes on a cam latch you turn with a flathead screwdriver.

Wipe clean with a damp microfiber. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh solvents to keep the powder-coat finish in shape.

Why this product

Built to drop in and stay quiet.

Welded steel frame

A 20-gauge cold-rolled door in an 18-gauge welded frame. Heavy enough to stay flat for years and to take a knock in a hallway or garage.

Concealed hinge, cam latch

The door hangs on a concealed hinge and closes on a cam latch you turn with a flathead screwdriver. Nothing protrudes past the wall line.

Built to be painted

Flush-mount and finished in white powder-coat that takes bonding primer and wall paint, so the panel can disappear into the wall.

Install

One cut, then it screws in.

The only part that takes any care is the hole. Outline the inside of the frame, cut to that line, and the flange laps over the cut edge.

01

Level and outline

Hold the panel flat against the wall where you want it, check it sits level, and draw around the inside of the frame. That pencil line is your opening. Do not trace the outside of the frame.

02

Cut the drywall

Cut along the line with a drywall saw. Stay on the line: a hole that comes out slightly tight is easy to ease open, one that comes out too big is not.

03

Secure the frame

Push the frame into the hole and screw through the flange into the drywall. The flange laps over the cut edge on all four sides, so a rough cut stays hidden.

04

Close the latch

Turn the cam latch with a flathead screwdriver. The door closes flush on its concealed hinge.

FAQ

Before you order

Don't see your question? Email support@brycehardware.com and a person will answer it.

The panel size is the size of the hole it fits. Rather than working from a figure, hold the panel flat against the wall where you want it and draw around the inside of the frame: that pencil line is your opening. Do not trace the outside of the frame, which is larger and is what laps over the cut edge once the panel is in. There is a Measurement Guide image in the photos on this page if you would rather see it drawn. The welded frame covers the cut edge on all four sides.

White, powder-coated. A flat white that takes paint cleanly if you want an exact match to the wall. The product photos show the actual finish.

Yes, and it is built for it. Scuff with 220-grit, prime, then paint the door and frame the same color as the wall. You can also wallpaper the door: score along the door edge first so the panel still opens without tearing the paper.

Steel where the panel will be seen or knocked: hallways, garages, utility rooms, anywhere the door has to stay dead flat and feel solid. It sits flusher and paints cleaner. Plastic where moisture or budget rules, since UV-stabilized plastic cannot rust. This is the steel one.

Plumbing shutoffs, electrical junction boxes, cable and internet runs, irrigation valves, HVAC dampers: anything you have to reach again without cutting the wall open. It is not fire-rated, so keep it out of a rated wall or ceiling assembly.

Solidly built but beware of ACTUAL dimensions

The access panel is solidly built for residential or commercial use. The panel can either be screwed directly to studs or ceiling joists or can be installed within the field of the sheetrock with the tabs that are designed to be bent to secure to the sheetrock. The mechanism for opening the panel is a bit tight to turn but otherwise works well (simply use a flat head screwdriver to "unlock and lock" the panel).A few frustrations that almost had me rating it 4 stars.1) The dimensions are NOT 8" x 8" as shown in their product photos. In fact, they are more like 7 5/8" by 6 1/2" as far as the area you can access when the door panel is open. So, be careful if you need to be able to get your hands up in the panel to access wiring or plumbing as that's a small area. Or, just order a larger size.2) It looks like they spray painted the panel after it was assembled as you can see the areas by the hinge that are not painted (clearly the door was held open partially while they painted it. This is hidden inside the panel when it's closed, but just speaks to the quality of design and construction in which they cut corners.Overall, I'm giving it 5 stars but just beware of the actual dimensions you can access through.

A good option for panel access

We needed to drywall in an area around our hot water heater, but needed to keep access to the pipes behind. This panel was a great option. It is a solid and well made panel that has a "locking" door within a framed metal plate. The "key" is to just use a slotted screw driver to open and close, it does not lock. It's is well painted with a glossy white that so far shows no signs of scratches or peeling. The opening gives enough access to about a 6x6 space. The frame itself is rather deep, we ended up putting some extra wood supports around it as our drywall was a bit thinner. I do wish I had gone with a larger panel, but this still works great for the reasons that we needed it.

Good quality panel. Secure closure. Slight Gap, Deeper than drywall -- must fit between studs.

Build QualityThe door is about what I expected for a steel door. The paint coverage is good, slightly thin at the corners of the door but overall good and better than expected at the frame seams. The door is straight and steady and opens easily . The door lock is a bit stiff (open with screwdriver) and secures well. There is a slight gap around the door (see pcitures 4,5.)UseThe panel is easy to install and fits well. I will note that it must fit between studs as the portion that "goes into the wall" extends beyond the thickness of drywall.Final thoughtsThis is a good quality solid access panel that I recommend.

Elegant robust access door

The Bryce access panel is built like a tank- heavy gauge welded frame and door are smooth and sleek on the outside, but equipped with tabs for hidden fastening to framing inside. You will have to frame the opening to support this heavy hatch, but it is meant to be a permanent solution, unlike the cheap plastic snap in covers. I used this to cover a bare hole in the back of a closet which was cut by the previous owner to access plumbing. This hatch would be fine to use in any visible location- it looks that good, it blends in and can be painted or papered to match your decor.

Best steel access panel for the money

This is a solid access panel, not flimsy plastic. It's simple, made well, and looks great. The latch is solid and can be unlocked/locked with a penny or flat head screwdriver. This 8x8 size is perfect for an access to water valves for a bathroom in the basement. I like this access panel so much that I bought a few more, including 24x24 size that are awesome quality from Bryce Hardware.

Glad this exists

Finished the interior of my garage and turned it into a studio. However, I had a water pipe with a cleanout that I did not want to drywall over. This 8x8 panel allowed me to cover the cleanout while keeping the look neat. Painted like the wall, it hardly noticeable. Glad items like this exist!

Good for exterior wall

I had to cut a whole in my exterior stucco wall to create an access panel to gas lines. This steel panel worked perfectly.

Nice panel

Good strong panel with a nice color. Exactly what you want to be able to easily get access to pipes in a wall.

Excellent Quality

A well constructed product. Could use more dimensional information to be a 5 star.

Looks good but bad latch

I got this to putt an access to a water shutoff. Upon opening it I immediately had an issue. It was impossible to open the latch. It was so difficult I wondered if a key was required. After contacting the seller and being told it wasn’t, I got more aggressive with a ratchet. Still it wouldn’t budge. It appeared the latch was painted over and the paint had frozen it closed. I scratched the paint off and tried chiseling that latch loose. I finally got it opened but my gosh it’s tight. It is extremely hard to open and close. I pried the latch a bit praying it didn’t snap. It’s tolerable now but not for what I need it for. In the event I need to shut that water off quickly I don’t want to have to fight with this. Perhaps mine was defective and others have better luck. Install doesn’t look like it will be too difficult. Metal tangs you can bend over and screw it in. Or just putt some adhesive on the rim and attach it. I wish it worked better. I really needed this.
